Media That Matters film screeningsMedia That Matters Aotearoa is a short film festival run by and for young people, to get them thinking about and takinbg action on global issues. Held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in June each year, Media That Matters Aotearoa is based on a US film festival and media movement - but we put a local, and youth, spin on it.
The aim of the Media That Matters Aotearoa short film events is to explore and utilise film to create an opportunity for education, understanding, and involvement amongst young people. By utilising and creating access to issues portrayed by youth this project aims to spur young people to learn about and take action on a variety of issues. It also aims to encourage young people express their voices and create their own films. The US-based Media That Matters Film Festival provides a showcase for short films (of up to 8 minutes in length), on important topics and aims to inspire viewers to take action. The festival organisers provide open access to the jury-selected short films and DIY-style information to allow the issues to be presented and discussed in communities around the world. The DVDs of films from the Media that Matters Film Festival that have been bought by the Global Education Centre provide the primary content for the Aotearoa film event. We also work to incoporate locally made films into the event. To find out more about MTM or to hold one at your school or in your community email or phone +64 4 496 9510.
